Umuahia.
Prioritizing Healthcare delivery programme to Abians and the residents alike remains one of the fulcrums that defines Dr Alex Chioma Otti labour party led Administration in Abia state.
Unarguably,the state government has invested heavily in the health care delivery system at various levels,be it at primary,secondary and tertiary levels as one of the key sectors that Governor Alex Otti anchors the policy thrust of his administration.
There are other critical areas such as:Infrastrural developments, Education,Environment , Commerce and Industry,Security, including prompt and regular payment of salaries and pensions. These enablers has rated Gov Alex Otti as one of the best performing Governors in Nigeria.
But alas,as Gov Alex Otti is replicating good governance across the three senatorial districts in the state, interestingly enough,the Mayor of Umuahia South is also busy providing leadership that is grassroot- oriented as attested to by all and sundry.
Coming nearer home,it is indeed an established fact that since Hon Engr Chinedu Enwereuzo came on board as the Executive Mayor of Umuahia South,the Council area has been noted as a role model for redefining good governance that is unprecedented in the history of the “Gateway Council.”
These are in areas of agricultural revolution,infrastructural developments, human capital development, security,sports, education etc . For instance,because of her exploits in agriculture ,Umuahia South was chosen as a demonstration farm by the state government wherein other local government areas in the state come to learn the agric- wonder techniques which the council can boast of. Thanks to the untiring efforts of our capacity mayor who works round the clock to ensure the success of the exercise in particular and other facets of local government economy in general.
Not only that as a grass- rooted politician,the mayor of Umuahia South is always
in constant touch with people from the grassroots so as ascertain their yearnings from time to time.
Apart from regular visiting,so he introduced “Town Hall Meetings across the three Clans comprising Ubakala,Umuopara and Olokoro that make up Umuahia South wherein he gives account of his stewardship and get the yearnings and aspirations of the people through immediate feedback mechanism.
The resultant effect of this bold initiative has been rewarding as it provided an ample opportunity for the council and the people to move on the same page due to interpersonal communication effort otherwise refer to as the face- to face interface in the communication parlance .
Indeed,as Gov Alex Otti and Mayor Chinedu Enwereuzo are excelling providing excellent service deliveries both at the state and council levels, indeed,both wives of Executive Governor of Abia state Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti and wife of Executive Mayor,Mrs Wuraola Jemilat Enwereuzo are not left out in their own part assisting their husbands to succeed in onerous task of governance as it affects their own areas of jurisdiction.
The above comparison goes to show the popular saying that for every successful man, there must be a successful woman or women behind him or them.
No doubt,the wife of Abia Governor Alex Otti has been playing complimentary role to her husband governor to excel particularly as it concerns issues of children and women in the state.
In the same vein,the wife of Executive Mayor of Umuahia South LGA of Abia state, Mayoress Mrs Wuraola Jemilat Enwereuzo watching and seeing her husband Mayor working tirelessly to reposition Umuahia South better than he met it, do not want to be found wanting as she has been very dutiful in covering her beat as it affects children and women matters in Umuahia South .
While basking on euphoria of completion of a successful 2025 Umuahia South Cultural Festival executed by the Council under the able leadership of her husband mayor started on 28th December, and concluded on 29th December,2025,the following day,30th December,2025, the mayoress having a workholic husbanda immediately commenced the Measles Rubella Vaccination awareness campaign ,educating the people of Umuahia South on the need to allow their children to take the vaccination.
Is it not amazing and something worth commending the wife of our mayor ?
Of course, yes, because she has been busy going round the council area to sensitize our people on measles vaccination even when people were busy enjoying their Christmas and New Year holidays celebration.
The above perhaps explains the stuff the vintage mayoress of Umuahia South is made of, emulating the tireless disposition of her husband/ mayor in getting things done right and at the appropriate time.
Since the end of last year till date,,there has not been a dull moment for “iyawo Mayor” who has working hard to deliver the mandate given to her by Her Excellency,the wife of Abia Governor,Mrs Priscilla Chidinma Otti.
Shortly after new year celebration,the mayoress campaign train landed at Umuahia South Council headquarters where she took time to educate the members of Executive Council presided by her husband mayor on the importance of encouraging children to take the measles rubella vaccination campaign that will be coming up in the week of February.
She also held a strategic meeting with members of Umuahia South Legislative Council preaching the gospel to carrying the awareness campaign to their various Wards in the grassroots ,just as she visited some secondary schools for the same purposes of creating the much needed awareness on measles rubella campaign .
Just last week, Mrs Jemilat Enwereuzo reached out to the wives of traditional rulers,clergy men, other critical stakeholders in Umuahia South in a strategic meeting held at the Council Secretariat on the sing sing which is awareness creation on the forthcoming measles rubella campaign.
In attendance during the awareness campaign exercise in the Conference office of the council included :the mayor of Umuahia South,Hon Engr Chinedu Enwereuzo,the Health Authority Secretary(HAS) Mrs Eucharia Igwe, Social Mobilization Officer, Mrs. Ugo Uma Uduma, Wives of Traditional Rulers (Ugoezes); Religious Leaders; The Reverend Obinna Nwokoro, Market Women Leaders; and representatives of relevant health agencies involved in safeguarding children’s wellbeing through improved immunisation coverage.
Addressing the gathering, the health authority, Mrs. Igwe, explained that the Measles–Rubella vaccine would be administered to children between the ages of nine months and 14 years, while routine immunisation services for children aged 0–23 months would continue during and after the campaign.
She highlighted the grave public health implications of measles and rubella, noting that both diseases can result in severe fever, blindness, congenital malformations, miscarriage in pregnant women, and even death if left unchecked.
Mrs Igwe who noted that vaccination remains the most effective and reliable preventive measure.
In her remarks, the Mayoress, Mrs. Enwereuzo described the introduction of the Measles–Rubella vaccine as a major milestone in the state’s efforts to curb vaccine-preventable diseases and strengthen public health outcomes.
She noted that measles and rubella continue to rank among leading causes of childhood morbidity and mortality, adding that the new vaccine would significantly enhance protection for children against the highly contagious and potentially fatal diseases.
She called on wives of traditional rulers (Ugoezes,) religious leaders and market women to leverage their influence in mobilising communities and dispelling misinformation at the grassroots.
According to her, the success of the campaign hinges on collective responsibility, trust, and sustained community engagement.
“The success of the Measles–Rubella vaccine introduction depends largely on community ownership, collaboration and trust,” Mrs. Enwereuzo said.
“We must work together to ensure that every eligible child is reached and that no community in Umuahia South is left behind.”
She stressed that there should be no room for vaccine hesitancy or rejection, as the health and future of children remain a collective responsibility.
They unanimously reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Measles Rubella vaccine introduction and strengthening the community-based awareness campaign ahead of February 2026.
