The Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal has flagged off fumigation exercise to cover government offices and open spaces in Abia State.

He explained that the flag off will commence with the fumigation of government offices including the Government House,after which,the ministry will extend the fumigation exercise in the open spaces in the State.

Speaking in an interview with newsmakersonline newspaper in the ministry premises, Friday,during the flag- off ceremony,the Commissioner for Environment and Urban Renewal,Hon Philemon Asonye Ogbonna said that the intention is to get rid of mosquitoes in the government offices in the State.

The Hon Commissioner for Environment and Urban Renewal added that there is need to get rid of mosquitoes that cause sickness especially during this rainy season where are high rate of mosquito bites.
According to him” we have just performed the flag off of state wide fumigation exercise ceremony today,the intention is for Abia State government to get rid of mosquitoes in the hiding in the offices in the State.

Environment Commissioner however charged the Mayors of the Seventeen local government areas in the State and community leaders to replicate the same fumigation exercise in their various Council areas and communities respectively.

Ogbonna who assured that the fumigation exercise will last for the next six months while calling on critical stakeholders to key into this laudable initiative in order to reduce the spread of mosquitoes bites to people in the State.

On his part,Mr Godson Aharanya , the Director,Pollution control and Environmental health also noted that the ministry wants to get rid of insects of medical importance such as : mosquitoes,rodents and rats in order to have a good working environment.

Aharanya further explained that the general disease in Africa is malaria and that when you get rid of insects,the malaria rate will reduced drastically, adding that the chemical compounds they are for the fumigation exercise is environmental friendly.
